problems with dash and power source for engine fan

i have a 91 rs camaro, when i bought it the guy showed me a switch on the dash next to the steering wheel he or somebody else put inside of the car to turn the engine fan on. when you lift the hood you can see a wire running the dash aroud the engine to the battery to the fan.. it turned on every time i flipped the switch, even without keys in it or it running. with help from a friend i replaced the broken flywheel and didn't drive it much, just around the block a few times, i finally took it on the freeway and flipped the switching not thinking much of it, but once on the freeway i realized the speedomedor was way off, it was saying i was going 90 when i was going 60 etc, and the gas gauge didn't work at all, i was a little worried but figured i would just go home asap and fix it when i could find somebody to help me, then my girlfriend noticed allot of steam coming from the engine and i looked at the temp gauge and it was way up there.. pulled over asap.. opened the hood, the water in the engine water tank was boiling, and i looked at the fan and it wasn't on. i tinkered with it for a while and the fan simply wouldn't come on.. i had to call my friend who came out and bypassed it and finally got the engine fan on, once i got the fan going and the temp gauge down i drove home really depressed that my camaro had so many problems, my step dad wont help me fix this cause he wont have the time for a while and i cannot afford a mechanic.. any help would be very much appreciated.. i really have no clue what to do.. thanks allot guys.. i love my car and want to fix this any advice or if anybody knows how i can fix this it would be great.. thank you

ps, i dont mind having to use the switch to turn the fan on..

Re: problems with dash and power source for engine fan

It shouldn't be that difficult to figure it out and fix it properly. I'm going off memory here but I think it's the middle relay under the hood at the firewall at the drivers side. Once someone posts up a wiring diagram (or buy a book. they come in handy) I would start testing there. Again, this is just off the top of my head, there should be a wire that goes to the fan, a constant power wire to supply the fan once the relay flips, a wire that powers the relay (i think it was in run only), and finally a wire that the ECM grounds to flip the relay on.

There are two fan configurations for your car.

Which engine do you have?

On the 305 TBI with one large fan, the fan is turned on by a Thermostatic Fan Switch located on the lower right side, near the rear of the engine.

You can jump the switch to ground, and if the fan runs, replace the Thermostatic Fan Switch.

Gage Rage

We’ll address the gas gage first because it’s more important than the speedo.

Here’s how to test the fuel gage.

Remove the sender wire going to the gage.

Tape the bare end of the sender wire and put it aside.

Use a potentiometer with a value of 100Ω or the closest you can find.

Connect one end the potentiometer to the gage from the location you removed the sender.

Connect the wiper of the potentiometer to ground.

Turn the key to RUN.

Slowly adjust the potentiometer from 0Ω to 90Ω.

If the gage is bad it will exhibit the problem you have.

If the gage is good it will display a smooth transition from one end of it’s range to the other.

Therefore the problem is with the sender or wiring going to it.

You can use a loose potentiometer, or you can throw together a quick little panel like this one.
