Cannot check codes!! 1984 Trans Am

HI i am re posting this is electronics prob belongs in this forum.

I am having problems with my TA,and I recently purchased a Autoxray 6000 so that i could set Tps and the dwell. Well scanner says vehicle not responding. So i tried the paperclip method and no flashing check engine light. So i then checked ecm fuse and its good, then i checked the SES bulb and its good. Well i am out of ideas and i am in need of help.

Also SES bulb doesnt light when key is turned on or car started. I also tested for continuity of ground with Test Port B and the volt meter beeped. But it did not when i tested port A.

The TA runs and drives fine it just gets 11 mpg and 14mpg on the highway. That is why i purchased scanner to i could adjust the CCC carb. Any pointers would be great.

If you followed all the steps for the OBD-I I see no reason why the vehicle would not respond. Did you check to make sure all the wires to the OBD-I port were snug, connected, and free of dust?

That Does Not Compute

With the ignition OFF, disconnect the ECM.

Connect, thru a fuse
(whatever small amp autofuse you have lying around) a wire from ground, to the ECM connector with 15 wire positions on the harness at pin C to the brown wire with a
White stripe.

Now turn the key to RUN.

If the
Service Engine Soon light illuminates you need a new ECM.

Happy Racing!

Re: Cannot check codes!! 1984 Trans Am

You can check and set your Dwell by using a dwell meter hooked to the green connector on the passenger side firewall in the engine bay. You can also check your TPS voltage by hooking a volt meter to the TPS connector, just take a reading off the connector itself (you'll need to stick a pin through the shielding to get a read strait off the wire itself or backpin though the back fo the connector (It will fit, barely if you go in under the plastic of the connector).

Do you hear clicking in your engine/carb area when you turn the key to "run", without starting the motor?

check to make sure the ecm memory wire is connected by the battery and then the ground wires behind the heads and at front of intake are tight.

Ok, the clicking means the MCS in the carb is working.

Re: Cannot check codes!! 1984 Trans Am

Do you need to have the emissions tested? Does it pass the emissions? Since the MCS is working, I wouldn't worry about the TPS, those are factory set and if it's off, your carb probably needs to be rebuilt.

If you get a dwell meter you can check how the car is running and how the MCS is locating thus metering the fuel. If you haven't, I'd probably swap out the O2 sensor while your at it. Are you leaking fuel? If your mechanical fuel pump on the engine is leaking fuel this could also cause your low mpg.

Re: Cannot check codes!! 1984 Trans Am

Already had carb rebuilt and also has new mechanical and pusher electric pump. And no I don't need to pass emissions. Last year I was able to check codes and the light did light up.

Also it's not leaking any gas, just want better mileage. Also already have replaced o2

Re: Cannot check codes!! 1984 Trans Am

Sounds more and more like your tune is off. My 320hp 350 getes 14mpg combined, 12 city about 17-18 highway. CC Qjet, full emissions set up and air conditioning. Since the carb as rebuilt, it needs to be re-tuned on the car, was that done by a shop or is that what you're trying to do now?

Yes I am trying to tune carb, and basic rebuild. It was a carry in and pick it back up rebuild. It's the reason I purchased scanner so I finish the tune up.

You need to check out this link.

You can hopefully find someone near you that can help if you can't figure it out.
