Melting Wiring Connector

I have 1987 Camaro Sport with the 5.0 305 Carb. Well I just got done pulling everything from the heads up. Now when I try to start it the connector by the passenger firewall smokes and is starting to melt. What could be causeing this. Bad Ground, Bad ECM? I don't know what to to. It aggervating me. Thank You. I am adding a couple pictures to show which connector.

Re: Melting Wiring Connector

You have a short someplace in the wire bundle. What "stuff" is connected through that connector?

I'm guessing you pinched a wire in between something during re-assembly.

Re: Melting Wiring Connector

Was there a ground braid from the back of the head to the firewall? Also, where do you have the negative battery cable connected?

Yes The ground braid is hooked up to the other group of wires on the stud on the back of the passenger side head.

The negetive is grounded to the front of the alternator bracket like my Haynes showed.

Re: Melting Wiring Connector

Those things sound ok, does it get hot just when you turn the key to the START position? Does the engine actually start spinning over?

Re: Melting Wiring Connector

I havent noticed it with just it in the run position. But when I try to start it it does it. It doesn't feel warm when I touch it though. The engine will turn just a little bit. Its kind of acting like the battery is dead, but the batter has around 12.4 volts. I am at a loss at the moment. I am in the process of checking the grounds and making sure I don't have any wire pinches from the engine reassembly.

You could have pinched something somewhere I suppose. This sounds suspiciously like the starter has one of two problems:
1) the positive battery cable is not the wire trying to supply starting current to the big positive stud on the starter solenoid

OR I think more likely still

2) the starter is trying to complete the ground circuit thru some other wire than the fat negative battery cable.

The two fat cables connected to the battery are primarily for powering the electric starter motor since it needs huge amounts of current. Other wiring supplies power and completes the ground path for all the other circuitry in the car's electrical system. As soon as the starter attempts to use one of these alternate wires, things start smoking when you try to crank it.

I will check all the starter wires again.
