84 Trans Am Cranks, Won't Ignite
Hey guys, I tried searching and didn't find much that seemed to match my issues.
So my trans am ran fine for over a year, through an oregon fall, winter, spring and summer. As soon as I move out of town, it stops working. It did start raining again, but it has for a few weeks now.
The TA originally had a 305 in it, I dropped a 383 in it. Demon carb, vortec heads etc nothing special. Ran fine for a year.
It turns over just fine, but doesn't spark. I don't have a timing light, so I pulled plug 1 and wrapped a wire and some electrical tape around the part that contacts the block and grounded it on the battery, no spark. So I swap distributors with my el camino. Ignites okay but timing is way off, so I pull the cap to make sure the rotor is aimed right. Looks fine, so I put the cap back on... no spark. Nothing.
I've checked the battery power to distributor, seems fine. Checked continuity between battery power and tach to make sure coil was okay. Checked continuity between rotor/coil contact and coil/plug contact, fine.
The only thing I can think of that changed is the weather. I took one distributor and sprayed the inside with WD40, didn't help. I took the original distributor and changed coils with a new cap, didn't work.
It confuses me as to why the old distributor would stop working, new one would work for a bit, then stop working after I pulled the cap. If it was really a moisture issue, wouldn't that have been resolved once I changed caps?
Is there a fuse or something that I don't know about? I did replace one blown fuse, but it's dark 24/7 here in Oregon during the winter, so I couldn't read the title and it didn't seem to change anything anyways. It was a 20Amp blade fuse.
Oh and I checked voltage to distributor and that looked okay. ~12v
