head lights how do they work

so i have a weird problem that is happening and b4 i go ordering parts i would liek to see if anyone has any input. please read the problem b4 saying " you need new motors" or anything like that

83 trans am

the headlights worked fine, drove the car for around 6 months, only issue it ever had or still has is when you open them the pass comes up about half a second after the drivers, and when you close them, the pass closes about half a second after drivers BUT im not worried about that, this is the problem

i took the car apart to repaint it, i did remove the headlights and the relays on core support, now the car is back together and im driving it. if i turn the headlights on normally neither light comes up but the lights do come on, BUT if i ever so slowly push the headlight button about the halfway point b4 any lights come on the lights pop up and then i press it the rest of the way and the lights come on and when i turn the lights off every now and then one light will stay up,

all my mechanical skill tells me its the switch so my question is how does the lights work, i mean is the switch kinda in 2 stages, 1st stage turns the motors on and second stage turns the lights on? i just dont understand it being the switch as i never touched it while painting the car

Yes it does sound like the switch.

When the switch is pressed one leg of the switch applies power to one part of the Door Module, and the lamps thru a dimmer switch.

The other part of the switch applies power to the other part of the module.

That’s why you probably need a new switch.
