91 TPI VSS

Ive used this forum to answer a ton of questions I have had with my TPI swap from a 91 TPI 5.7L Z28. Well now I have a question that I cant find a specific answer too on the forum.

BACKGROUND: When did the swap in 05 I had a 700r4 and NP207 t-case with mechanical speedo so I never hooked up the VSS and always had an SES code 24. I recently swapped the drive train for a MG5 and an NP241 out of a 98 K1500. I have an Slip Yolk Eiminator kit that has a 40 tooth reluctor ring on it as well.

PROBLEM: I hooked up the VSS wires using the 98 k1500 2 wire sensor. Now when It will start and run fine, but the minute I move It falls on its face and dies. I can disconnect the VSS sensor and drive it all day long, but I get SES code 24. I would really like to have no codes. Any ideas as to what could be my problem?

Thanks Guys!

Facing His Problems

What falls on it’s face?

The VSS output?

Speedometer?

Code 24 can be set by idling therefore it’s good to learn to ignore it.

Like NINÅ said the 24 can be caused bye a excessive high idle when the vhicle is not moving caused bye a vacuum leak or throttle blades open to much. you need to use a drac to convert to a 2k optical signal reprogram the eprom to accept the optical signal on the 730 on c6.

The engine dies when i try to move it. I have had the speedometer hooked up independantly without the computer in the wiring loop and it works just fine. I have an autometer gauge so i can run one wire to sig input on the gauge and ground the other. I throw code 24 when I disconnect the sensor. The computer sees the open circuit and throws the code. I have read that I "trick" computer by grounding the yellow sig wire and it wont throw the code, but the computer will think I am not moving and some things will not work right.

I am pulling 22inHg at idle, I just redid alot vacuum lines and found any leaks I had, so its not vacuum. Now I do need to back the throttle plate down a hair because im idling at 1000rpm. Is 2k optical signal what the 40 tooth reluctor vss would put out if connected to a DRAC? My gauge has the capability of being a buffer with a +5V DC square wave signal. Dont know if this is useful infomation but with just my guage hooked up during calibration it counted 107,337 pulses in roughly 2 miles +-50ft. I am still learning on concepts and capabilites of reprograming of the PROM, so you may have to give me newb laymans terms when referring to what needs to be fixed. From the factory the ECM reads the signal straight from the VSS, is it possible to program it to read the sign wave straight from my newer style sensor? Im trying to do research and see what the camaro ecm is supposed to read from the VSS as apposed to what the 98 K1500 ecm would read from its VSS that should give me a base line of where im at and where i need to go. I feel like i have been reading multiple answers to that question. Do you know what the parameters are (any voltage from ecm to yellow wire, what signal should the VSS be sending, is the purple just a simple ground, etc?). I appreciate all the help.

Re: 91 TPI VSS

stock the ECM is looking for a magnetic signal from the speed sensor of 4000 pulses per mile.
the +5V DC square wave signal from your gage won't work without making a change to the chip & it must be a certain number of pulses per mile. i believe one of the links i posted in your other thread may have what it needs to be.
the dying problem answered in your other thread.
