question about checking codes

My MIL comes on after I slow down from Highway speeds and I have a few funny driveability issues so I went to see if any of the codes were storing since it stays off after I shut her down. I tried jumping out pins five and six and then eleven and twelve and both times the light only flashed twice. Am I doing something wrong or is my diagnostic circuit malfunctioning? I connected the jumper wire with the key off, so I don't know what I could be doing wrong.

Re: question about checking codes

if the ecm is not blinking codes or giving out a data stream it is more than likely faulty.
