T5 Digital Gear Indicator [rear mount]

Another one of my years old ideas is gonna happen ???

I need to remove the center section, sand and repaint it, along with polishing the yellow off the plastic on the tach.

Gonna finally attempt to add a gear indicator light with the tach.

Will just use this cheap indicator made for motorcycles, has 5 speeds and N, just no R, but maybe later I can build or re program one to make an R.

the car ones cost way to much and are just for autos [not even close]

no clue yet how im gonna make it work, my old idea was always to use a ground activated system, maybe if I can find a T5 pattern shift plate with slots, use rubber fingers on micro flip switches for the gear slots???

maybe use a relay of sort so N is always on, unless in a gear?

bright white back up lights probably make seeing R a mute point.

Dunno why I didn't see it, but now that I have the thing it is ground activated.

Making it 100% easier with my original idea.

make a plastic plate with lead blocks, ill weld a point onto the shifter fore n aft, wire for each gear will run to a block, that is ground isolated, until I put it into gear and the metal point stabs the lead, grounding the lead for said gear through the tranny, simple........

Now that I got the car back on the road ive had a 2nd thought, on the stick center console just behind the shifter is the shift pattern molded into the plastic.

IM gonna pull that out and see about back lighting each of those with a LED, wire in inline, so that I know its displaying right in the rear, with out looking.

I might have to scrap or sand the plastic thinner in those spots so the LED light shows, they wern't meant to light up, but LEDs are bright enough it should shine right though if thinned a little.

I'd like to see how this turns out too. Been thinking about adding one to my dash for a while now. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but why the rear mount?

Edit - After thinking about it for a few minutes, the shift lever itself should be able to function as your ground. Weld or bolt a contact, or even a small screw, to the front and rear of the lever, then all you need is a bracket to hold the wires in the right positions. When you move the shifter, the contact on the shifter lever hits the contact from the wires and grounds the correct one.

I don't want to ruin this thrad talking about why, had a big thread before on it that got locked. you can get the jist of it in my build thread. It works for me is all that matters and is a hard to find tach that matches the rpm redline for the V6, LED V8 tachs go red to soon.

I wasn't looking to get into a big discussion, just curious is all. I do remember reading through your other thread a few years back now. Definitely looking forward to how this works out.

Im back on this, but I first have to make a slotted shifter plate to replace the leather boot.
