cant get codes

Engine: 305 5.0
cant get codes
I have a check engine light on in my 89 formula and I'm trying to get the codes to flash by jumping pins a and b on the dlc connector but all that happens is the fans start spinning. Or at least that's what it sounds like. Any ideas ?

The lack of communicatin kinda points towards a bad ecm, pin a8 on the ecm or pin E of the aldl with the key on should be over 2v but most of the time it will be close to 5v. Another cause for the light to be on is the brown/white wire from the mil being grounded. You can try reseating the memcal as well to see if the mil goes off.
