gas gauge does not work need help

I want to get this fixed before I take it in for exhaust work because I don't want to cut the exhaust off it If i have to drop the tank and replace the sending unit. which is probably what I will have to do.

its a 1988 gta and I jacked it up and tested all the wires for resistance and none of them are reading the 0-90 ohms that they should. if I am not mistaken the light brown wire with the stripe is fuel pump and the purple wire is for the sending unit and the black is just ground.

thanks for all your help in advance.

like I said I think I will have to drop the fuel tank and replace the sending unit. I just want to make sure

So what readings do you get ; open circuit or a direct short ?

it reads open, infinite resistance. it reads completely empty when its plugged in and the same with it disconnected. I don't know if its normal for the sending unit to be out and it to read empty but I have never had a digital dash before

so what do you guys think, shouldn't the gas gauge read over full with an open in the sending unit. it might be different on the gta with the digital dash, I don't know that is why I am asking.

please get back to me soon before I spend the 125 on a sending unit

Re: gas gauge does not work need help

well I spent the 125 on the sending unit and it looks like I need it but there is one problem. I plugged the new sending unit in and pushed the sending units arm to full and I have no movement in the fuel gauge.

so now I am wondering if it could be the ground. if the ground was bad wouldn't the fuel pump not be working. I checked the resistance on the new sending unit and it seems to work fine so I know I have to replace the sending unit but how do I get my gas gauge to work
