Faulty flasher unit ?

Hey guys,

Ive been swapping front and rear bumpers on my friends 91 V6 over the past couple of days, no problems there and everything was working fine last night when we tried everything (lights etc)

Tonight though after changing the rear bumper, i checked the lights were working again, and the easiest way to check the indicators are working is to turn the hazards on, so i pressed the switch and they were clicking really slowly and then nothing.......no indicators (turn signals)

I left the car a while when i was doing something else and out of curiosity i tried again and they were fine ? but then i drove the car for a bit and if i indicate right, its working but quite slow, its making the clicking noise and the green arrow lights on the dash. However if i indicate left NOTHING :/ no clicking and the green arrow doesnt illuminate at all.

Re: Faulty flasher unit ?

Had another look today and i now have smoke !!!

I checked the fuses and they were all fine, so i turned the hazards on and they began flashing on the dash and clicking, but they werent doing anything on the actual lights on the car, by time i got back into the car there was smoke coming from the steering column :/

i switched it off for a few minutes then tried the indicator stalk only, the right hand one works fine, inside and outside of the car, however if you press down to turn left the clicking is there, but there is no green arrow on the dash and the lights dont work on the car either.

Re: Faulty flasher unit ?

One more piece of info, ive just had another person check the back lights while i sat in the car and the brake lights dont work now either ! what the hell.

so no brake lights, no hazard lights and only the RH turn signal works.

We will assume the replacements were from a salvage yard.

Make sure the connectors are in good clean condition.

Whilst a friend is stepping on the brake pedal wiggle the connectors to make sure the brake lights stay solid.

The smoke from the column is consistent with a short.

If it’s a fine wire the fuse won’t necessarily blow.

Turn signals:

With the key in RUN, turn signal stalk in the left turn position, use a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) to probe the light blue wire at the turn signal switch.

Is there power there?

If not, replace the switch.

If there is power there, make sure it gets in and out of the connector located near the lower right of the steering column.

Then make sure power gets in and out of the large connector located near the left front of the dash below the relay bracket.

From there it goes to the lamps.

Happy Racing!
