[HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
[HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
Car is always stored with battery unhooked
last year i baught a new battery because it was bad.. put that one in and the car worked fine
a week ago i wanted to take it out of the garage (finally) and as i suspected the battery was dead, so i charged it up but it never showed that it was FULLY charged, was just a notch before charged.
(i charged the battery when it was unhooked, does that make a diffrence)?
anyway, so today i hook the battery up and get in the car, turn the key to ON and i realise that:
-the battery guage shows battery is dead
-radio doesnt work
got out. unhooked the battery, put the charger back on and says that battery is almost fully charged
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING GUYS
i dont wanna try starting it yet cause if i have to make my house smell like gas, id rather just do it once :P

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
have the battery tested. if its bad should be under warrentiy and replaced. if its good insist on a new one anywas. next make sure the pos and neg I tight. I once had my car keep dieing mid drive from the neg beening lose. the neg beening lose, or bad ground, will casue the car not to respond.
does the dome light come on? if not its gona be a ground problem.

That might be the reason it will charge to “one notch” away from full.
You might have a battery drain when the car is OFF.
Sometimes the under-hood or hatch light or motor does not turn off so check those easy ones first.
Then connect an ammeter in series with the battery.
If there is more than 50 milliamps there is excessive draw.
(You can use a small bulb such as a side marker bulb if you don’t have an ammeter.)
Disconnect the alternator wires to see if IT’S the problem.
With everything turned off and doors closed observe the current flow.
Pull the fuses one at a time, including the pump fuse near the battery, till you see the current drop.
That’s the circuit with the problem.

Once you get the battery situation worked out, invest in a battery tender. Cheap insurance to not have to deal with what you have going on now.

Batteries diminish in capacity when they are completely of near completely discharged.

UPDATE
so i go to start the car.. nothing..
at all
not even the usual ticking noise
im starting to think the battery isnt the problem, but my battery charger is
i mean the dash guage shows the battery is empty.. car obviously wont start.. but the car charger shows its full, and when i move the aligator clamps around theres barely no fluctuation on the battery charger, i think ill have to get a new one and see what happens!

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
take the battery.... to a.... PART SOTRE AND TEST IT! its free to test (advance/autozone/oreilys) they can also charge it (all free) they have a 1hr quick charge machine and they can test it after its charged. if the battery is going dead when not hooked up then it sounds like a bad cell in the battery, whichs kills the battery. the part store can test for that (again its all free).

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
Take a volt meter and put it across the battery terminals and verify that the battery is indeed dead.
Hook up your battery charger to the battery and plug it in.
Then take a volt meter and put it across the battery. If the battery charger is working, it should read somewhere around 13-14 volts.

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
You have a bad ground on the battery. Trace the battery ground to the block and disconnect and clean the terminal and the spot where it connects.
Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
if i remember well, the battery ground is right around here

is that the proper way to have it grounded?

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
wrong place. im not sure (if anything) is grounded in that area. the main battery ground (for my 1992 Camaro) is on the front of the passenger side head, behind and a little bit below the a/c compressor bracket. good luck getting to it. when I just recently took my heads off I had to remove the brackets and that's when I saw the battery ground.
there are 2 other points for ground, both on the back of the heads (1 driver side 1 passenger side)

Re: [HELP PLEASE] Battery problems!
Grounds run all over the place. I installed new cables running for both ground and hot wires. If your battery sits in that part of the car (mine did) I put a ground wire there, where you have it marked. There are also grounds on the back of the driver side head, and I haven't seen a stock wiring in awhile but I put one on the intake of the engine. You can check for corrosion and even wire coating cuts or frays. If the resistance in the wiring becomes to high, it may not work well at all.
