I'm having an issue with my 1991 V6 Firebird. Since purchasing my car, most of the times when I'd start it, you would only hear a whirling sound on the first turn of the key, then if you'd try again the car would start right up.

Now, my car won't start at all. When I turn the key, I hear a whirling sound from I think the starter.

I'm running out of daylight, so I need to get this figured out soon.
Any help is much appreciated.

It sounds to me like maybe the solenoid and or the Bendix has failed. Either way the starter must come out.

Ok, I pulled the starter out and took it to the local auto parts store. They tested it a few times. The starter seems to be working and extending fine. I reinstalled it, and am now confused as to what to do now.

Sorry about that. It still doesn't start. I can hear the starter spinning. It had been doing this on the first attempt to turn the key, but usually would start on the second try. I did clean alot of oil off of it when I pulled it out.
