HEI identification
Hi,
I am restoring a 1984 Z28 HO with my son. The stock carb and intake manifold have been replaced with a Holley 600 cfm (80457-2) and a Wieand aluminum manifold. The ECM has been disconnected, so I know the distributor needs to either be mechanical or vacuum advance type. The distributor in the car is a GM HEI, and it has a vacuum advance. I can only find one set of wires coming off the distributor that connect to the coil. It does not appear to have a connector for the ECM. However, I read that some early HEI distributors were equipped with vacuum advance but they were still ECM. I am trying to verify that I have a non ECM HEI distributor. The reason I ask is the engine has an idling problem. I know there are no vacuum leaks, I have taken care of those. The engine needs to idle fairly high or it stalls. It also cycles in that the rpms go up then down then steady, rinse repeat. I read that would be a symptom of using an ECM HEI distributor that is why I want to make sure about the distributor. I do not know how hot the cam is, so for all I know that is how the engine is supposed to idle. Thanks in advance.
