No gauge lights or some light
I've searched through old threads but none are really similar. The gauge lights and dome light don't work. The radio, check engine, brake light, courtesy lights, radio, headlights, tailights, blinkers, power mirrors, horn, parking lights, and power locks all work. All the fuses are good, is it still possible I need a remote dimmer switch? Where are the grounds I should check? PO installed a kenwood radio and there is a wire for it running to the fuse box, what should I try? Car is an 86 trans am 305 tpi

Here's pics of the wiring if anyone can see anything odd, the PO severely hacked it up.

Is the white piece with the metal rod going into it the dimmer switch?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: No gauge lights or some light
Yes that's the dimmer switch; changes the headlights from low beam to high beam. Not related to the dash lights.
I'd suggest, try to remove all that .... stuff ... the PO put in there; put it back stock; and go from there. Pretty hard to troubleshoot a mess like that.

Diminishing Returns
There’s no dimmer for the interior lights but there is one for the dash.
You mentioned Remote Dimmer.
If you have that in your car it could be the dimmer wheel but first do some measurements.
Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the dark green wire with the WHITE stripe going to the dimmer wheel.
When you rotate the wheel back and forth — what happens on the meter or test light?
Then probe the brown wire.
When you rotate the wheel back and forth — what happens on the meter or test light?
Then probe the probe the plain dark green wire.
