Hey guys,

So I pulled this plug yesterday and set my timing ( yeah I know it was the wrong plug). After correcting my mistake and setting the timing correctly my car began to smoke quite a lot. Any idea in what the connector I pulled does? Or why my car is smoking so much?

Thanks.

I should add that this connector is connected to both the coil pack and egr.
The car is a 91 3.1L with auto trans.

Is that from the 82 or the 91?

That's your MAP sensor I believe. I'm not sure why that's causing it to smoke, though. I'd assume it smells really rich? Hopefully it's extra fuel and not oil that causing it.

It definitely smells rich. I plugged the connector back in as soon as i realized that it wasnt the EST and continued to time my car.

Welp, if that's the only thing you changed and your timing is 100% correct, I'd say that may be your issue. Do you have an SES light on? I'm assuming you plugged it in without the car off, yes? You might have fried it or damaged it somehow by doing that. I would order a new one and swap it out to see if that fixes your issue. Or first, try disconnecting your battery for a bit and plugging it back in to see if that fixes it. The ECM could have sensed an issue with the sensor and produced a fault code, preventing it from using the MAP sensor voltage. That's the cheapest and easiest.

I've checked the timing multiple times and it is 100% correct. And yeah I did plug the map in with the car running. Would a blown map cause the SES to be on?? Because I don't have any codes (SES) light on the dash. I unhooked the battery for 5 mins after timing it, and that didn't seem to help.

Thanks for IDing the part! I'm gonna do some more research to see if I can test the sensor before buying a new one.

Re: Anyone know what this connector is for?

Just to inform you guys of my problem....

The motor had a catastrophic headgasket failure and I dont believe it was related to unplugging the connector in the picture.

Thanks for the input though.
