Testing pickup coil & Ign Module ?
Hi all,
Im trying to see if my distributor is at fault with my cars terrible running state, or at the minute its not even starting up, it just keeps cranking over and over.
Can the pickup coil and ignition module in the dizzy be checked with a multimeter at all, if so does anyone know what sort of readings i should be getting from them ?

Ok i found a guide on how to check the pickup coil and that seems fine, im getting a constant 827 Ohms even if i wiggle the wires around.
Im still looking for vids on testing the ign coil and module though

From what i can see you cant really test an ignition module on the bench with a multimeter :/

Get yourself a fuel pressure gauge and check for proper fuel pressure as well.

Give this a read:

It was able to help me when I had issues a few years back.

Re: Testing pickup coil & Ign Module ?
Thanks thats a great article.
I have tested for spark but got mixed results, my friend helped me out with this and we first tried it with the plug out of the engine and it was sparking, then with the engine running and it still running crap he pulled no.1 and no. 3 leads off out of curiosity and the engine didnt change........... surely if it was sparking it would of ran worse which was confusing to say the least.
I did read on another thread the plugs can spark ok out of the engine but when in the engine under compression they crap out, however ive fitted a brand new set of plugs last week and its still the same so its something else.
Im getting goof fuel pressure as i fitted a gauge and a AFPR, i get 45psi
Ive got a whole other thread about the entire problem in the TPI section btw, but checking the ignition module is next on the list i think, even though its only a couple of years old, and when my old one gave up the car would still always start and was stalling at junctions etc

Re: Testing pickup coil & Ign Module ?
take the ignition module to any big box auto parts chain, have them run the test on it multiple times, this heats the unit up and might show good while cold or warm but when hot fails, I have seen this lots of times.

Re: Testing pickup coil & Ign Module ?
The test you did is not for ignition but for dead cylinders. Why do you think it is spark? If you pull a plug wire with the engine running and there is no change, either you have no/low compression, or a burnt valve. Did you do a compression test? You might have a cracked distributor cover but it sounds like you got some serious engine work to do. Forget wasting time on the ignition after replacing the distributor cover.
