87 GTA twin fan help
Hey guys,
Ive finally got my car running nice today and it was running for about 10-15 minutes in the garage and i was waiting for the fans to kick in but it never happened, i switched the car off when the temp gauge was approaching 230 ! thats too hot for my liking. The coolant in the expansion tank was just beginning to bubble.
Can anyone tell me which relay is for the fans ? after i switched off i had a route around where the air filter is and noticed this relay connector, so if this is for the fans then hopefully its just a case of plugging a relay in !

What temperature do the fans usually kick in at anyway ? on my previous engine i had them wired to switches so if they arent going to turn on until the engine is red hot i might go back to that route, i dont like the engine getting too hot.
Also around that area i noticed this bright red connector too, ive got no idea what thats for ? if its for something to do with the charcoal canister that used to be there then fair enough

Re: 87 GTA twin fan help
So i think the smaller relay that clips to the back of where the RH headlight mounts is for one of the fans ?
And im still not sure if the standard size relay that was missing is for the other fan or not. When the car gets upto temperature do they both come on at the same time, or does one come on and if it still gets too hot does the other one come on afterwards ?

Re: 87 GTA twin fan help
Feel free to delete this post, my fans are now sorted and back on a switch !
After much testing, my friend who is a great electrician got the fans working as per the factory....well sort of, the primary fan ran all the time, and the aux fan kicked in after the car got very hot when i turned the engine off !
Going off my factory service manual that is actually normal, it doesnt come on until the engine is super hot, ridiculous !
So as per my request hes rewired them through the original relays to a switch under the dash so i can turn both on and off when i want, not when its too late

gta.....the primary DOES NOT run all the time. It is programmed to come on around 220 ish, not sure of the temp. The secondary comes on with the air and at high temps IIRC.

Re: 87 GTA twin fan help
if think it was on all the time because i used a spare relay which isnt the right part number, as all the wiring was correct.
But like i say even if it worked as per stock, 220 is too hot anyway, on the 5.0 engine that was halfway on the gauge and when my coolant started to bubble.
Im much happier with a switch and i can keep an eye on my temp gauge
