Turn signals and reverse light dead

Hi everyone

I purchased a Pontiac Firebird from '86 a while ago. It was purchased as a hobby car, so I don't want to take it to the garage to avoid huge costs.
So, in the beginning the fuse for the brake lights/blinkers popped randomly each time I applied the brakes. It occured one time that when I wanted to start the vehicle (I hold the brake pedal while starting), smoke came from the vents. From that moment on, the blinkers stopped working, and I discovered that the reverse lights did too. The hazards still work, so the flasher is still okay.
I decided to take out the dashboard (since I'm getting a new one soon), and started looking to faulty wiring. It seems like magic, because now the brake lights work without popping anything. I can't find any sign of burned wires though, and I have no clue on where to start to repair the blinkers and reverse lights. I checked all the fuses, and they're fine.

I hope anyone on here can tell me what to do, would be very appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Ps. this is my first post here, so if anyone feels that I'm doing anything wrong, please tell me. Thanks

Not necessarily, the Turn Signals and the Hazards use different flashers.

Even tho the fuses look good use a small bulb or voltmeter to see if the fuses have power on both sides when the key is in the RUN position.

If you have an automatic transmission, with the key in the RUN position probe the
dark blue wire at the switch on the right side of the shifter.

Is there power there?

If you have a manual transmission, the backup lights switch is located on the left side of the trans.

You’ll see a 2 wire harness going to it.

The wire
colors are light green and dark blue.

You can verify if it’s the problem by connection a small bulb to the
dark blue wire and ground.

Now the next time the backup lights fail to illuminate, see if the test bulb is illuminated.

If it is, you’ll know the problem is not the switch, but in the wiring going towards the rear.

There might be a bad connection in the connector at the left rear of the car.

TURN SIGNALS:

Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.

Using a test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the purple wire going to the steering column connector.

It’s the larger of the connectors located on the right side of the steering column.

If there’s power there, turn the blinker to the left position, then probe the
LIGHT blue wire at the same connector.

Is there power there?

Happy Racing !
