power window switch wiring loose?

I replaced the power window up/down/left/right switch in my 1991 GTA. With the switch plugged into the harness, it works just fine. After I snap the switch into the shift console, the right directional switch needs to be pushed harder than other three directions in order to function.

I am having this issue with two different switches, which leads me to believe it's the car's wiring. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I would rather not cut and splice a new connector in my car's wiring if I don't have to.

You can find out if it’s the characteristic of the switches or a wiring problem by using a jumper wire to activate the motors.

If there is no time delay difference when using the jumper, you will know the wiring is good.

Re: Hard Power

Thanks for the feedback! Since the problem occurs with across two different switches and only occurs when the switch is snapped into the center console, I think it is the female connector on the car's wiring. Is there a way to unpin/repin this connector?

Don’t know offhand, maybe someone will chime in, if not, GoPainlessWiring.com should have pin removal tools for that connector.

Can't remember if its a spade terminal or the round ones. If its spade there is a tab in the middle of the connector you can try to bend back in place. I cant remember which side (connector or switch) the little tab (lock) is on, but one side will have the tab and one side will have the hole for the tab.

To remove the terminal from a plastic connector push one of the following, http://www.whiteproducts.com/removal_tools.shtml or a small straightened paper clip, from the front of the connector, between the metal and plastic, and pull out the rear via the wire. There are usually two locks (tabs), one that hold the terminal in the connector (plastic) and another that locks the two terminals together.

I hope that made sense.

Re: power window switch wiring loose?

Thank you so much for the help. Here's pictures of what it looks like.

The terminals are round, not blade type. How do I know which replacement crimp-on female connectors to buy and what de-pinning tool to buy?

Re: power window switch wiring loose?

You'll have to take that connector apart to access those terminals....does it pop apart or is it sealed? I thought it was the power window switches you were having issues with?
