After market sppedometer or fix original
HI im new to the forum and new to owning a camaro, a little info about it:
1991 RS
350 V8 out of a 1978 chevy 3/4 ton
Edelbrock 4 barrell carb
Edelbrock preformer intake
700r4 tranny(not sure if original or out of something else)
Anyway the dash gauges dont work, or at least the speedo, gas gauge, and tach. I didnt pay much attention to the others as there is an after market gauge for volt, oil pressure, and temp. I would like the gas gauge and speedo working. The guy i bought it from said that the computer was completely bypassed(which is true you cant start it with just the key, there is a push button in the center console to get around the vehicle security system) anyway im not exactly rich, and im wondering how to hook up the speedometer if its still possible stock or if i should go after market,or what ever is easiest/cheapest. i am mechanically/electrically inclined so i believe if given instructions i could do it myself. Same with the gas gauge, i actually thought it worked, as it read 1/4 tank, but when i added gas it didn't move. Any help is appreciated, if anymore info is needed just ask.
And if this has already been covered sorry i tried finding it and couldn't.
Also im not even sure if im in the correct thread area, let me know if i need to post elsewhere.

Fuelish Response
Here’s how to test the fuel gage.
Remove the sender wire going to the gage.
Tape the bare end of the sender wire and put it aside.
Use a potentiometer with a value of 100Ω or the closest you can find.
Connect one end the potentiometer to the gage from the location you removed the sender.
Connect the wiper of the potentiometer to ground.
Turn the key to RUN.
Slowly adjust the potentiometer from 0Ω to 90Ω.
If the gage is bad it will exhibit the problem you have.
If the gage is good it will display a smooth transition from one end of it’s range to the other.
Therefore the problem is with the sender or wiring going to it.
You can use a loose potentiometer, or you can throw together a quick little panel like this one.

SPEEDOMETER:
Gain access to the buffer which looks like this:

It’s located behind the instrument panel at the right.
Connect an audio amplifier to terminal A yellow wire to make sure it’s getting a steady signal.
Ground to ground, the signal wire to terminal A yellow wire of the VSS.
With the car on jackstands listed for a hum from the amplifier when the rear wheels are rotating.
If you do, then find out if you get a hum from terminal C tan wire.
The tan wire then goes to the speedometer unit.
If it gets to the speedometer but the speedometer does not work, have it repaired or replace the unit.

TACHOMETER:
If the tach needle NEVER moves it is not getting power or is defective.
Because you are electrically inclined trace the power input to the tach to see if it gets power, and make sure the grounds at the back of the dash are making a good ground contact.
