Throttle position sensor keeps dying

Hey ya'll, for some reason my tps keeps dying out on me. I've gone through 3 in the past 6 months. Anyone know what could be causing it to go out so fast? The autoparts guy is getting pissed at me for getting new ones on his dime since they have a lifetime warranty

Thanks!

Wow!!! Never heard of that. They are actually fairly simple piece of electronic. Do they melt? Crack? Or just simply fry? I would say either heat, electrical surge or mechanical stress due to improper positioning or tolerance issue with aftermarket.

My 2¢ worth

Best of luck!

Yeah, it's really annoying!

There doesn't seem to be any type of physical damage to it, it just starts acting up and making my car stutter during low-rpm coasting, losing about 5-6 mpg, and eventually making starting a PITA. This had started about 3 years ago, but I only figured out what it was last winter when it got so bad that my car wouldn't start.

I'm guessing that there's some sort of electrical short somewhere causing it to fry, but I really don't know how or where to start looking/watching.

Re: Throttle position sensor keeps dying

If your car is a 1991 3.1 V6 it should be a LH0 engine with 1227730 ECM. So the TPS should only have 2 wires. The reference signal 5V and the ground. Both hooked to the ECM at C1B5 for ground and C3F13 for reference signal. The TPS is a simple potentiometer that varies the voltage with throttle action. The 2 wires are part of a main wire harness that goes into a fairly large connector on the passenger side between the body and the fender. Then inside it hooks up to the ECM. You may want to verify all the connections and also what kind of reference voltage is coming out of the ECM C3F13.

That would be a start I think.

Best of luck!
