Ignition Control Module

i was going to buy a cheap ICM on ebay for my 86, 4bbl, 305 trans am because they are super cheap but none of them fit my application despite the fact that they look identical to mine. i went to amazon and they said that the part numbers that WON'T work on ebay will work with my car. so now i'm stymied. what is different about my car from all the other 305's out there?

Re: Ignition Control Module

You probably have the LG4. Others are the L69 High Output, LB9 TPI, and L03 TBI just to name a few.

Re: Ignition Control Module

OK, i just went ahead and replaced the ignition module and still no spark. i have 12v coming into the distributor in the pink wire and -for what it's worth- 4.5v in the yellow wire. what does it all mean? how do i check the coil?

Re: Ignition Control Module

This is out of an '88 Firebird service manual. Hope it helps. Are you getting anythings coming out of the distributor?

yes, the car is all stock. the coil is in the distributor.

antares: i'll check out that coil test page but it's different from mine. i turned on the ignition and poked around with my voltmeter but i don't know what i'm doing. there's 12v going into the ignition module on the pink wire and 5v in the yellow wire.

Re: Ignition Control Module

Go to Chevythunder.com and check the HEI/EST section. Very comprehensive and lots of pics and diagrams with trouble shooting sections. HTH!

Re: Ignition Control Module

I have seen many dead brand new out of the box ICMs. Take the ICM to a local auto zone, advance auto, etc and have them test it.

If the ICM is good and no spark, it's the coil or pickup.

If you want used, I have a whole dist. with coil, cap, rotor, ICM, etc removed from a running '84 z28 with LG4 305.
I have it listed on CL for $60. I will do $65 shipped. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wat/pts/5425550844.html

Re: Ignition Control Module

This site has good info as well: http://easyautodiagnostics.com/gm/4....ed-icm-tests-1
Had issues with a new ICM - took it to Auto Zone and it tested ok - but still no spark.
Set up my own test and the module wouldn't fire a spark plug. Replaced the module with one that would fire a plug and it fired right up!
