Starting from scratch

Over the years, prior to my ownership, the wiring in my car has been modified, cut, taped, and so on. I removed the TPI motor and 5sp. Right now the car sits with no engine or trans.

Im debating on removing all wiring and starting over as tracing some of it has become a nightmare and some wiring has become brittle. My question to the community would be, do you think I should go with the Painless 21 circuit system, or just buy a new original fuse block and start with some spools of wire.

If drivetrain makes a difference, my plan is to go with an EFI system/6sp combo. Any opinions are welcome.

That's ALOT of work!

Since your that far in, how do the floors look? Have you done SFC's? Now is a good time.

Maybe just check all wiring and replace as needed. Are you keeping TPI, or swapping motors?

Stock motor/trans is long gone. Not 100% sure on motor yet, but it will have EFI of some sorts.

SFC's will be coming, along with a lot of other suspension upgrades.

Alot of the wiring under the hood is brittle, and the radio harness has been hacked up.

Re: Starting from scratch

well, you will see anyone who has swapped LTX, or LSX in has basically redone the entire underhood harness. I did mine for my LT1 swap, and it really is most of the harness under the hood, the only thing i kept was the HVAC and the lighting/horns. Even the lighting could use a relay system.

I even redid the window harness to add in one-touch up and downs. If you have the time and money, it might not be the worst thing to update everything to a newer style. Its just loads of time and money.

Re: Starting from scratch

Not too worried about the money, and time, well, I've been on this forum for 10 years and slowing working on the car here and there. I just want to do everything correctly and just once. I generally search quite a bit before posting, hence my low post count.

Im removing the interior soon and figured while it was out, and there was no drivetrain, this is the best time to do any wiring. If it takes me 10 weekends to replace and lay correctly, Im fine with that.

I'll be reaching out to Painless soon, and also researching just starting from scratch and getting a list together. I've found all new taillight lamp sockets, headlight sockets, etc.....I'd rather everything possible be new. Thanks for the replies.
