Brake Lights Not Working (Only Come sometimes).

I was out earlier today and I was told my brake lights were not working by a lady who pulled behind me at the Auto parts store and by the employee staff.

I when I checked with a friend just now, they only seem to come on, once every 5 to 7 times. I checked the fuse box and the fuse is fine.

Could it be the bulbs going bad? Or could these be the brake switch? Also where is the brake switch? Other threads say its on the back of the pedal. I am assuming they mean where the pedal meets underneath the dash? (It's a tight space under there so maybe I missed it).

I'd definitely check the brake switch. It does attach to the pedal under the dash. If not the brake switch I'd suspect faulty wiring somewhere.

My car is an 86, I checked the bulbs on the hatch and they seem intact.

The trick is now getting to that brake light switch.

Re: Brake Lights Not Working (Only Come sometimes).

The switch is on the 'seat' side of the pedal. It has a plunger that comes out when you push the brake. You can push the brake with your hand and see the plunger apparatus while contorted head in foot position. With a visual aid at the rear, push the pedal, when no lights appear, use second hand to wiggle the plunger out further. If they come on, replace switch or figure out what is keeping switch from coming out. If they won't come on, pull the wire harness from plunger switch and jump them. If that doesn't work cien por ciento, then it's another problem like ground at the lights. Hope it's just the switch, gl.
