Complete SIR removal

Got my dash pulled apart to sort out previous owners electrical hacks. I do not use an airbag in my car, the steering wheel has been replaced with aftermarket. I will not be going back to the original airbag wheel at any point.
Can i remove all of the SIR components and wires from the harness under the dash? Am I correct in saying every component that has the yellow plastic connector is part of the SIR system? Would there be any other issues that result if I do this?

Re: Complete SIR removal

I've done this recently in my Camaro. I don't think it's safe to say the "every" yellow connector is for the SIR system. I think there were some othe colors used too. I used my factory shop manual to find all the wiring and remove it. There is also the sensors behind the front bumper, and a sensor/control module under the center console, behind the shifter. I've noticed nothing strange in my car, except the SIR light staying on. I just removed the bulb from the cluster.

I'm not going to play "internet conscience" here , but I do feel it should be stated that it is against Federal law to knowingly deactivate the airbag and that if a serious accident happens with bodily injury to the driver the insurance WILL* seek to disallow the claim due to the applicability of the federal law across all the States of the US . Quite honestly , I'm surprised you can pass the "safety equipment" part of the Vehicle Inspection in the State where you live without the bag in place . Where I live , if it's supposed to have the airbag and it's physically obvious that it's been removed (custom wheel) , that's an automatic rejection sticker .

* I have a Friend who got the MAJOR runaround from an insurance company on a bodily injury claim for a Jeep crash in which the air bag was obviously deleted by a custom steering wheel . Took him a few different Lawyers and a few years to straighten out that mess .....

Re: Complete SIR removal

My state does not conduct inspections.

On the matter of safety. The only reason I felt safe removing the airbag is because I installed sparco bucket seats, with a 5 point harness attached to a harness bar and hard points welded to the uni-body. I feel this is much safer than an airbag ever will be.

Additionally in the event of a crash my body will not impact an air bag given I will be strapped securely to the seat.

Re: Complete SIR removal

While PA does require annual safety inspections, there is no part that states the airbag must be in place to pass. The airbag only has to be there if sold by a dealer. Private sales do not require them. When I got my Camaro in 2008, it did not have the airbag as the car had been wrecked and the bag deployed. I've never had the car fail for the missing airbag, but was told once that "technically it should be there, but since it's not required I'll pass it".
