Headlight Switch issue?
My headlight switch on my 1992 Firebird works fine when I turn on the headlights. Everything comes on. However when I turn on just the parking lights, my headlights flip up but the lights stay off. Why is the headlight motor recieving a signal to actuate? Is this possibly a bad switch? I have replaced a few bad bulbs recently (I've owned the car for three weeks) and I know years ago 1994-ish I had some crazy electrical issues arise from installing a wrong tail light. But to the best of my knowledge all the lights that I have changed have been correct. I have changed a fog light, a shifter light and a drivers side tail light.

In the headlight switch there is an element responsible for actuating the marker lights and the motors independent of the headlights.
It sounds like the element is touching the second contact early.
Use an ohmmeter to verify then replace the headlight switch.

Re: Headlight Switch issue?
Thank you so much! I suspected the switch. I really appreciate the response.

I also have this problem intermittently, so I'd be curious to the results of replacing the switch. When I had mine apart to clean I didn't really see how it could contact the other one early, but you never know.

Re: Headlight Switch issue?
I would imagine the switch could go bad. It is responsible for doing a lot. It turns on the parking lights, fog lights and interior lights with the one section, and the headlights and the headlight motor with the second part. I know several wires work go into a plug that goes into the back. I'm sure corrosion anywhere would cause a short. I just didn't want to change the switch for no good reason.
