It's a 86 Camaro. I have no idea what this is. It was mounted behind the dash

Re: What is this plug??

That is (was) the module that took a signal from the original ECM and used it to activate the check engine light . It was only found on cars that were originally "CCC" (Computer Controlled Carb.) according to what I've been told . If you have the Vortec swap listed in your avatar and especially if your not using the original ECM , it's about as useful to you as disc brakes are to a turtle , eliminate it when your cleaning up all that nasty wirenut business I see going on in the rest of your picture .

PS , don't throw it away though , even if your car will never use it again , instead consider offering it up in the for sale section for like $10 or $15 plus shipping for someone who does have an intact CCC system who may need it .

Re: What is this plug??

I appreciate the reply. I was wandering if that's what it was because all the wires went to the ECM plug. Yeah I never throw that stuff away. I'm doing a full 4th gen dash conversion not a half a** job either but 100% full ac/heat so it will work the way it's suppose to. That's why there is so many wires in the picture lol

Yup,... It's a lamp driver module, I've only found them on Carb & Crossfire CCC cars. ( Not used with MPFI or FI )

John I have to ask , where you say "Carb & Crossfire CCC cars" does this mean that the Crossfire was two CCC carbs ? I had always thought the Crossfire was two TBI units only and not two CCCs (computer controlled carbs) ? Or were the earliest Crossfires two CCCs and later became two TBIs ?

Re: What is this plug??

I don't know much about the crossfires,... I've only owned 1 and it was removed for a non CC Carb engine. I'm pretty certain that the crossfire was 2 TBIs. I probably should have written "Factory Carb & Crossfire CC cars" with the "CC" meaning "computer controlled" to be a bit more specific.

With these cars the ECM light was managed using the Lamp Driver... ( ECM to Lamp Driver to warning lamp ), but the "Fuel injected cars" ( MPFI, TPI, & Even TBI ) used a direct connection from the ECM to the warning light. I assume the crossfires used the Lamp Driver because that is how all the other early Thirdgen ECMs were already designed.

Some time ago I converted a 86 MPFI V6 Firebird to a factory computer controlled carb ( 86 vintage) and in order to have a fully functional CE light I needed to wire a Lamp Driver "in-Line" so that the original V6 dash harness would properly handle the ECM light signal being supplied by the stock V8 ECM. I don't remember exactly how I did it at the moment - but it wasn't too difficult to figure out.

P.S. I also recall that the Lamp Driver in the carb cars used a GREEN case like shown above, but the Lamp Driver on the Crossfire dash harness was mounted inside a BROWN case. Probably means nuthin',........ just something I remember being different !!
