Power out at turning ignitionkey - ‘91 Firebird

Hi all,

i’m having a random issue with my ‘91 Firebird

During winter, I have my battery disconnected.
Did some work on the car last few weeks (body) , connected the battery and every time I try to start the car, the first time I turn my key, all power goes out. So no juice from the battery. Dash goes out, lights everything

if I reset the car by disconnect the battery and back on, crank the car. Everything works and the car starts

I have full battery, so what could be the cullprit

thanks

Don

Sounds like there is a bad battery cable. When it occurs the next time measure the voltage drop across the cables. The one that goes to 12 V during cranking is the culprit.

Many times the cable fails at the battery terminal lug. It goes open inside of the lug where the cable is connected to the terminal. Can't see it, the cable looks OK, but is bad.

check battery also, it may be full but it may not deliver the amps needed and drops down to a way too low voltage when the starter tries to spin. next time when it doesn't catch do not pull the cable but turn on the lights and wait a little,.. if it starts then the battery is too weak when cold.

Awesome

One question; what do you mean with ‘doesn’t catch’

Alright!

Finally had some time have look.
In the end it was easy as 123

# My battery was low "on juice" so charged it
# One of the batterycables wasn't bolted down on the battery, so once I did that everything was ok!

Thanks for all the info guys!
