No start problems
No start problems
Hey guys!
im new to the forum. I picked up a beater 1984 z28 with a swapped in 350 and 5 speed. The PO parked for the purpose of pulling the engine for another project. He never got to it so I have a half installed engine I’m trying to fire up. Got everything together and I have no power at the key. No lights no noise or anything. I checked with a multimeter and I have 12.5 volts to the starter. Tested the ground and it seems good. But no power. There is one other wire running off the starter but my 1975 Camaro has three wires. Should there be three wire on the starter. The starter wiring doesn’t look like it’s been touched during the POs disassembly. What should I test next?! Thanks

There should be 2 Big Red Wires at the batt cable terminal of the starter, along with the batt cable. Each one feeds about half of the load inside the car. The ign sw for example is divided into 2 halves; each half of that gets fed from one of those 2 wires. One is in the black connector body and the other is in the blue one. (If memory serves, 1 ends up feeding the Accessory stuff - radio, HVAC, and so on - and the other the ign & starter) The headlight switch gets fed from only 1 of them. The brake lights from 1 of them. And so on. Each of the Big Red Wires has/had a fusible link at the end where it hooked up to the batt cable. Each of those has a large (3/8") ring terminal. Seems like some cars have just 1 terminal with both FLs in it, but there will always be 2 FLs.
Then, the starter solenoid wire is purple, and has a smaller connector. This goes to the S terminal, which is the smaller terminal closer to the block in case your starter has a solenoid cap w/ 2 terminals.
Put every wire you find at the starter with a 3/8" connector to the batt cable terminal, and the small purple to the S terminal; and it should work.
