Still fighting the wiring
Still fighting the wiring
So my $300 ‘84 z28 I picked up to autocross has been giving me one heck of a time with wiring. The PO jacked the wiring really bad and a lot of it doesn’t make sense to me (he had the starter wires running over to the horn??), so I’ve just been rewiring it stock. So I finally have power to the key. When I turn the key my gauges function headlights work and everything looks good. I don’t get a buzzer or power to the yellow wire that runs to the neutral switch. Does it sound like I’m getting the right power to the key? Could it be a problem with the ignition switch itself? The steering wheel was half pulled apart when I got it so maybe he was trying to fix that. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Still fighting the wiring
The large 12 gauge YELLOW wire runs between the ignition switch and the start relay and is only hot when key is in the crank position. If you're not getting power to it then maybe the ignition switch isn't working as it should, or there is no power to the switch itself. There is a metal rod that actuates the ignition switch when the key is rotated. That rod has to be adjusted correctly too or the ignition switch won't throw properly.
My car sat a long time and the copper contacts in the ignition switch had oxidation on the surface that stopped electrical continuity intermittently. I took apart the switch and cleaned the terminals and everything works peachy now. It seemed to me the original switch was higher quality than the new replacement and I wanted to keep the original if possible.
