1992 camaro speedometer

Hi Guys , looking for some help . The speedo on my 92 camaro works intermittently . It works most of the time and seems to be accurate however sometimes it stops working and then will come back on after a while. Is there a speedometer cable? Is there a fix for this ? Must I send out my computer or what the heck is the problem. Love the car and have no problems getting it fixed if someone can tell me what it is. Thanks

Hi Lisa ,

There is no cable , it's an all electronic speedometer that has a "VSS" (vehicle speed sensor) at the transmission's tailshaft (where a cable would have attached , back in the day) that sends a signal to the dash mounted gauge through a "VSS buffer" (which appears to be in different places depending on model year) .

here's a handy little schematic that covers your 1992's speedometer ....

Thank You Tuned Performance and I have corrected my post per your info .

Re: 1992 camaro speedometer

The above schematic doesn’t show the vss buffer but it’s in the ecm.

For a '90 - '92 f-body this is only true for a VIN T, F or 8. VIN E vehicles have a 4-Out Buffer box under the dash.
