Battery relocation with cutoff switch behind license plate
Started on my battery relocation yesterday by installing a 4 post 300 continuous Amp battery cutoff switch. I wanted the switch to be hidden, while still conforming to NHRA rules and having it accessible from the outside rear of the vehicle. I figured behind the license plate would be good spot to hide this, seems to have worked out alright.
Going to route from here over to the passenger side spare tire well, where I'll have a Taylor battery box.
Obligatory final product first:
First, I had to trim off the license plate bump stop from the driver side tail light, as it would be in the way of the switch.
Next I positioned the switch in the center of the flat area next to the hatch lock, and drilled the holes for the positioning stud, and the larger hole for the switch. Once this was done, I moved to the inside where I had to do quite a bit of cutting to accommodate the switch. This install won't work with cars with the factory hatch pull down.
Here's a shot of the metal removed:
With the switch installed from the inside:
The posts do stick out past the hatch release, but still fit behind the plastic trim. I removed a bit of the insulation/backing on the panel to allow a bit more room. I'll be putting proper insulated boots on the terminals before reinstalling the panel:
Picture with license plate closed. Switch is completely hidden. Just need to install a longer rubber bump-stop so that the plate holder doesn't rest on the switch.
I plan to run from the rear spare tire well, straight down to a remote charging post, and then over to the cutoff switch. From there I'll bring power off to my amp, which will be located in the trunk well. On the other side of the switch I'll run 1/0 cable back up the passenger side and through the firewall with a pass-thru connector.
For my ground, I'll run directly down through the body panel under the spare tire well, using a pass-thru connector so I can use it as a remote charging lead as well. I'll run over and tie it into something more substantial for the main ground.
More to come as I keep working on this. Welcome to any suggestions or tips!
