can't get key out of ignition and it will not start.

1969 Pontiac Firebird with console shifter. had transmission in reverse and wheels were spinning. put shifter back in park then turned off the engine. key would not go into lock position and now the engine will not start. just getting generator light. do you think its the lock cylinder needs replacing or maybe shifter is not going into park?

Are you saying it is an 89' or 69'?
On an 89' it sounds like the shifter is not fully in park, try putting the shifter in neutral and see if the engine will start.

It's a '69. I tried that but it still won't start.

Is the key in the dash or steering column?

Key is in the steering column. It has the cylinder key lock.

I know my 69 Chevelle has the steering column section rotate by shifter linkage to lock ... but mine is a 4 speed. Something to check. Google Team Camaro, that forum will help if you don't get it figured out.

Re: can't get key out of ignition and it will not start.

Try grabbing the bowl (fat ring) piece of the steering column just below the section where the key cylinder is located. If the bowl is turned counterclockwise, the key should come out. Many GM cars of the era used steel rod linkage going from the shift arm, up the firewall to the column. Bushings, wear, or adjustment may need addressed.

Thank you jmd. I turned the ring like you said and the key came out. It should start now. Thanks a million!
