Need a lot of help with wiper issues

Hello all,

Not sure if "Electronics" is the best forum for this or not, wasn't sure where else to put it. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to make sure to include all of the info I have & what I'm looking for.

I won' bore everyone with details, but years ago when I redid my car I left the wipers off of it. This car isn't a daily driver and I had no intention of ever driving it in the rain, so no big deal. However, during the moving of the car from one spot to another - as well as moving - I managed to lose all of the parts, I no longer have the wiper motor, the arms or linkage. I think I cut the head of the plug off and taped the wires up inside one of the harnesses.

Well, it's been about 6 years now and I found I never drive my car because most days, there is at least some chance of rain. I don't care much anymore about the car getting wet, but I can't really get stuck in the rain with no wipers. So, I decided it was time to put them back on. The problem, of course, is that I'm starting from scratch and I can't seem to gather the right parts to get everything back to working order.

Back in November, I posted on here and someone posted a couple of pictures of the harness, and also some info related to the 82-92 Camaro's having multiple wiper systems and to not assume all parts are the same. I've been following that advice, but I'm sort of stuck now and not sure how to proceed.

My car is a 1985 Camaro IROC-Z with delay wipers. I don't plan on installing washers, just wipers and ideally I'd like to get the delay to work but as long as I have working wipers I'd be happy. Here is what what I've done and the problems I'm running into:

I purchased a remanufactured motor from Summit Racing for a 1985 Camaro, see attached pictures - the back of the motor is wide open, and it has a tag that says "transfer original unit relay springs to the replacement unit terminals." So that's a problem so I don't have an original.

I headed to the local pull-your-own-parts junkyard, found a 1985 Camaro. Great! The car was stripped to nothing, no steering column or switches so I have no idea if it had delay wipers or not. But, the motor and linkage was still there. However, the motor didn't have a plug, but rather just two wires with terminal ends connected. I pulled the motor anyway, see the attached picture. Not the same size or shape as the one I got from Summit. I kind of feel like the motor I pulled from the junkyard wasn't the original one from the car, based on how it was wired. So, I'm not sure if I should try the junkyard one, go to a different junkyard and see if i can find one or what.

The junkyard motor also has spots for multiple plugs, a three-prong plug that I think is just for the wiper (the same three are on the motor from Summit) and maybe the other two-prong plug for the washers?

The next issue is, where can I get the proper plug for the motor? I was hoping to pull it off the junkyard car but as I said, it wasn't wired with a plug. I can head to another junkyard and see, but there are no other's within 35 miles of me.

Next, I went to take the linkage from the junkyard car, but it was busted (as were the arms). I found some on ebay, see the attached picture. I think the linkage is okay, but I have a question about how it attaches to the motor. I took the attachment from the junkyard car, there is a picture of that, too. It looks like the linkage has the same sort of attachement, but there is another attachment type on ebay as well (see attached picture). So not sure what is going on there.

Anyway, as you can see I'm in quite a mess and not sure the best way to proceed.

Typical GM wiring of that era is based on delay or not.
Washer wiring is usually the same.
Transmission attachment is usually the same.
You can wire in a simple on/off switch to get the system operational.
Start with a wiring diagram for your year to see what goes where.
Post the schematic if you need wiring help.

Re: Need a lot of help with wiper issues

I've found the wiring schematic online (and I have a Chilton manual for that year) but I think I need to figure out a couple of basic items first.

For example - where to the wiper wires actually come from? I assume they come from inside the car to under the hood via the body chassis wiring (one of the two plugs right by the steering column, I think).

Also, I went to another junkyard (a bit more modern one) and they looked up my car and said they had a motor - see attached. This one looks exactly like the rebuilt one I got from Summit, except the plug. The Summit one has two spade connectors, the one from the junkyard has three - but the wire attached to it only has two wires.

Also, the cover that I was missing and is on this motor has an additional place for a plug.

So, I'm confused as to what all of the plug locations are for, if I need to find my wires for all three spots? Should there be three plugs plugged into this motor? I don't care about the washers, does that mean one of these can go unused? Or two?

I'm going to dig into the schematic tonight and see if I can figure this out, but wanted to post again to see if anyone has any additional info - or photos of how their wiper motor is hooked up & what color wires/where the wires go.

Here is a schematic for my 1985:

http://austinthirdgen.org/mkportal/m..._continued.gif

If I'm reading that correctly, from the wiper/washer switch to the wiper/washer assembly, there should be four wires: Pink, Grey, Dark Green and Purple. Yes? I still don't know where they come from or what wires should go to what plug on the wiper motor, though.

Replying to old post, but, that's the wrong wiper motor for an '85.

84-87 had had the washer pump integrated into the cover on the motor itself. 88-92 cars had the washer pump in the washer reservoir, different wiring. Delay electronics were inside the cover 84-87 if the car had Delay as an option, otherwise the cover was empty inside. The motor you have pictured looks like one on a later 88-92 car, and the wiring is different and also has the rounded connector. Hope that helps.
