Jumpy voltage??
Appreciate any clues or insight!
i noticed about a month ago that when i start my car the battery guage reads 13 volts,
but from time to time it will go as low as 8 and not go back to 13.
i decided to dig around on the forum and see if anyone else possibly had this issue,so i bought another alternator and it seemed to work, atleast enough to have the vehicle running off of the alternator and not the battery like it was when the voltage would drop below 12.
the same issue seems to persist for me and im clueless as to what it may be? Even with the new alternator,i also tested the battery and it checked fine.
i installed a carburated 350 in my 85z28
whithout the electronic control and hooked my 700R4 up with vaccum for the lockup,
now i did put a larger cam in the engine.
could a larger cam and lower idle be the culprit?
possibly a ground?
the vehicle hasn’t left me stranded and all the electronics work but i can only assume the battery is taking an unnecessary beating.i did hook a multimeter up to the battery as the car was running, and once the alternator would fall i would get a lower reading so i do belive my guage is correct.with all this said, thier are times where the voltage stays at 12.5-13 for a whole car ride only slightly falling if headlights are turned on etc.
i do apologize if this is a novice issue or an obvious fix i just cant quite seem to find the problem.

Some alts will turn off at low RPM.
One solution is to install a smaller pulley on the alt to keep its’ RPM up where it should be.
