68 Chevy c10

We have a 1968 Chevy c10 .. new battery and new alternator but while running and taking the positive battery cable off it dies .. why?

Pretty sure 68 still used an external voltage regulator. I had a 65 c10 in highschool that would randomly eat one up and charging system would stop.
