Open/Closed Loop Indicator Light
Im looking to put in an indicator light that would ideally be on in open loop operation and go off during closed loop. Similar to the way newer cars work with the cold temp light on start up. The problem is I don't know what to use for an indication of this. The best idea I have come across so for is a post back in 2001 (wow) from a guy named Tim Burgess:
I don't know what solenoid he is talking about, but is sounds promising. Any ideas? I will be sure to post the final product if I can get it figured out.
Thanks.
Another way to determine open loop operation is to look at the voltage across the port / converter solenoid at idle (is selects whether the air injected goes to the air tubes at the head ports (open loop) or the air tube(s) at the converter(s) (closed loop). If the solenoid is powered, the ECM is in open loop. You may also connect an LED (in series with a 680 ohm resistor) across the solenoid to indicate open loop operation. The solenoid may go inactive at part throttle, while in open loop, but should be active at idle, while in open loop.

Tim is referring to the A.I.R. system solenoids. The two solenoids direct air to either the exhaust manifold, cat-con, or divert to atmosphere. They are located under a small black plastic cover on the passenger side.

Thanks, I now know what i'm looking for. Looks like the piece that attaches to the bracket of the coil. I have removed my A.I.R. system so there should be a pigtail floating around in then engine bay that I will tap into and see if I can get some reliable results from testing it. Ideally it would be energized in open loop and not in closed loop.

Why not? The more you know about the current state of your engine the better. I'm also going to put in lights to notify me when the fans are on or off.

I guess I’m not seeing the point.
just a FYI
The diverter valve power wire is f4 a pink and black stripe wire
The fans relay ground is on e8 & d12 for the secondary fan.
if your running 90-92 tpi.

Another idea is to see if they can still make you this

It has been tested with the 90-92 tpi $8d mask

Nice! I have been on Moates plenty of times before but never have come across this. I actually really like that idea. Anyone know of any others out there like this just for comparison?

Re: Open/Closed Loop Indicator Light
if this is a 7730 8D application the simply use the secondary fan turn on/off to trigger a light. the secondary fan function is in the 8D mask, just not used or wired up on F-bodies.
hook the light up to the normally closed side of a relay. the ECM will then trigger the relay to turn on which will turn off the light. the relay will be ground-triggered off a wire that hooks into the secondary fan terminal on the ECM.
then set the secondary fan turn on temperature in the calibration to be the same temperature as the closed loop threshold temperature.
