Digital dash fuel gauge problem

Howdy all,

i have an 88 gta with a digital dash. Everything works but the fuel gauge. When I turn on the key everything goes through the self check except the gas gauge. This makes me think it’s not the sending unit. Is that a bad assumption on my part if not that seems like a good place to start. I have had the dash off cleaned all connections and checked for broken traces and didn’t find anything. I am not sure the exact wiring from the fuse panel to it but like said everything else works. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Re: Digital dash fuel gauge problem

Is the gauge always reading full or is it completely inoperative?

Re: Digital dash fuel gauge problem

Sounds like the gauge control board either came unseated in the socket or is otherwise dead. The gauge cluster comes apart if you want to check the board connection inside. Otherwise you'll need to start diagnosing the fuel gauge board itself for a burned out component.

If you're not electrically inclined, that board can be swapped out in about 15 minutes if you have a spare dash laying around. It's located right behind the fuel gauge LCD panel.

Re: Digital dash fuel gauge problem

I already have the whole thing apart. I couldnt see any burnt traces. And I wish I had a spare dash. Those things are hard to come across. If I knew which pin on the board was power I would throw 12 volts at it and see if the display worked. I was wondering if the display itself may be delaminating. I have managed to find 2 pins on it that ohm out to all of the display pins but that is pretty much at the outside of my electrical skill at the moment.
