I know it looks like a multiple cigarette lighter, but could someone tell me what it was really used for?

Or lights in the hatch, but lights would be my guess as well. Possibly to power a laptop as well? I dunno. You'd think they'd hardwire stuff like that, but...

This is for the lights that are or rather were mounted in the back glass. There called dashmisers it is a self contained strobe that required a good amount of power. If you look you will see that the wires that lead up to it are heavy.

That is simply a multiple cigarette lighter-type outlet. It's pretty much poor man's hardwiring. It allows for accessories (radios, sirens, PAs, lights) to be powered without a mass of wiring somewhere else. They're actually quite common in cruisers, but usually under the dash in spacious Caprices and Crown Vics. Judging by the placement, they were indeed used for rear lights and possibly a lightbar, as lightbars were often on the rearmost section of Camaros due to t-tops or other considerations. If I were you, I'd transplant that unit up front under the dash or something...if you're the type of fella to use some accessories...personally, I just pulled out some fuses, wrapped some wires around them, and stuffed 'em back in to power my CB, scanner, noise blockers, and air horn - yeah, it's afro-engineering, but it's simple and effective. Of course, I get a nice shock every time I shut my car off, but hey, ya gotta pay the price. Enjoy that B4C!
