Ignition switch problem?

Car: 88 Camaro Iroc Z
Engine: 5.7 tpi
Transmission: Auto
Ignition switch problem?
I have a 88 Iroc Z automatic that will not start, but will run on starter fluid. When I turn the key forward to start it, the metal rod does not move the top of the ignition switch. I can press the collar near the rod and it will spring down and up. Is there an issue with the rod? Thanks
