Re: Speedometer help
Check the cable first. The speedo almost NEVER fails.
Also, if it has cruise control, it has 2 cables; one from the trans to the cruise regulator, and one from the regulator to the speedo. The regulator wears out and binds, and can break the lower cable (from the trans), strip the gears, etc.
Your problem is almost certainly one of those things, not the speedo itself.
I would also add, it is not electronic. It is strictly mechanical.

Re: Speedometer help
Oh, that's different then. It probably didn't just "fail" on its own, more likely it had some help.
Best idea is probably to just keep your eyes peeled for somebody parting out a 83 Firebird.
What is the max number on the speedo?

You mean the milage?, it is 112,000, if you are referring to serial number, I don't know, I have not looked, I would have to remove it from dash, as for how it got broken I have no idea, it was like it when I got the car, all the needle pointers are missing except one which is broken in half, the car was not looked after, wiring was cut up everywhere, holes all over the car, t-tops were siliconed in with household sealant, engine bay was stripped and left, engine was in pieces, she was in a very sorry state, slowly she is getting pulled together, thanks for your response

Re: Speedometer help
No; I mean, what's the highest speed it can show. In the US at that time, the national speed limit was 55 mph, and it was not legal for any vehicle sold to the "general public" to have a speedo that indicated higher than 85 mph. Police cars and such could go higher though. Yes it was pretty ridiculous. But I don't know about export models, or of course your specific car. If you buy a used one from somebody in the US it's likely to only read up to 85 mph. Which is what, 135 kph or so.

Re: Speedometer help
I will have a look when I go to garage tomorrow but as far as I know it is 85mph, I presumed the 112,000 miles was from new, I car was imported in 1991
