Help with faulty gas gauge 87’ Camaro
The gas gauge in my camaro doesn’t work. When I turn the ignition on, the needle goes past the “F” mark and keeps on going until it stops close to the bottom right.
I already tried removing the gauge and cleaning the 3 little metal rods with a wire brush but still nothing. When I manually push the needle (with ignition on) it always keeps going past the F mark.
Is there anything else I can try? Or is it just a bad fuel pump? I got the car not long ago but i do know the fuel pump was replaced recently.
Also, the oil pressure, voltage and temperature gauges are weird. Like, the gauges have little lines as if it’s meant to read the level with a needle, but behind the 3 gauges is just 3 red plastic circles and lightbulbs behind that. So it’s just... a red light. How am I supposed to read what the temp or voltage levels are??
TIA

Sounds like you have "idiot lights".Basically, the light comes on when something goes wrong.Which by then its usually too late, hence the name i guess.
The fuel gauge issue could be the sender.Which is in the tank. That requires dropping the tank, but beyond that i cant help.

Fuelish Advice
Here's how to test the fuel gage.
Remove the sender wire going to the gage.
It's an 18 AWG purple wire.
You can access it at the back of the dash or the fuel pump connector at the rear of the car.
Tape the bare end of the sender wire and put it aside.
Use a potentiometer with a value of 100 ohms or the closest you can find.
Connect one end the potentiometer and potentiometer wiper to the gage from the location you removed the sender.
Connect the remaining terminal of the potentiometer to ground.
Turn the key to RUN.
Slowly adjust the potentiometer from 0 to 90 ohms.
If the gage is bad it will exhibit the problem you have.
If the gage is good it will display a smooth transition from one end of it's range to the other.
Therefore the problem is with the sender or wiring going to it.
