1987 Camaro v6 cluster replacement question.

My camaro has the 85mph cluster that has the 3 idiot lights in the middle and big gas gauge on the right.

Ive seen a few clusters for sale that are different, that go up to 115 mph and doesn’t have idiot lights in the middle but actual gauges. They seller’s ad says the cluster fits 85-89 camaros.

Is it possible to install the 115 mph cluster on my car? Or do I have to do some kind of modifications for the extra gauges to work? I already know how to completely remove the cluster since I had to switch all the cluster light bulbs.

Ive attaches a few pictures for reference (of my car’s cluster and the cluster I want to buy).

Thank you for your time.

Re: 1987 Camaro v6 cluster replacement question.

IIRC most ( if not all ) Camaros are already wired for the gauges. You will have to remove the original engine mounted "switches" ( oil warning switch and temp warning switch ) and replace them with "sending units",...... but I'm pretty sure the Tach and the Volts will work once the gauge cluster is plugged in.

In the 82-87 there is a "barrel" looking oil pressure gauge sending unit that is made specifically for V6 and 1 made specifically for V8, and the cluster mounted tachometer is specific to V6 or V8. You can tell what engine the tachometer is made for by reading the oil pressure gauge: V6=40/80 oil pressure & V8=30/60 oil pressure. (Looking at the gauge cluster in your pic you can tell the tachometer is made for a V8 car because of the 30/60 oil pressure gauge. )
