87 RS speedometer choices ?

Picked up an 87 RS a couple of weeks ago. My 17 y.o son and I plan on slowly making it a street/strip toy. It was originally a V6/700r4 car but previous owner did a carbureted 350/TH350 swap. Our speedometer is the 85 mph and we were wondering if there was an easy swap for a higher mph speedometer? Would it be quicker or easier to fab up a new gauge cluster and go with Autometer speedo/tach/gauges? Pics of converted or updated gauge clusters are welcome !! Thanks for any info.

Re: 87 RS speedometer choices ?

Be advised that a V6 tachometer is NOT accurate when connected to a V8.

You can install any 82-89 factory Speedometer "head" into your existing cluster........ Plug-&-Play !

Any 86-89 cluster will plug in and work; but you want to find one from a V8 so it's got a V8 tachometer. ( V8 tachs USUALLY show a 4500 "yellow line" and the oil pressure gauge will read 30/60 rather than 40/80 for V6 gauges. )

Don't use a 82-85 cluster, the dash wiring is not 100 % plug-&-play match to the 86-89 cluster.

If your car currently has a non-gauge cluster you can install a full gauge cluster,... you will simply need to replace the engine's temp and oil pressure "switches" for "sending units" in order to get the gauges operational.
