(Pictures are below)
On my 86 I recently just switched all my rear bulbs to LED (except turn bulbs). I only noticed though after switching then that only one of my brake lights illuminates properly (left) and the other one is brake illumination all the time (right). The strange thing is that the bulbs illuminate abnormally when I turn on the running lights but the right is brighter and comes on like the brakes are pressed when in running light mode but when I press the brake pedal the right remains the same and the left one illuminates to the same brightness . I put the old bulb back in the right socket and still the same issue.
The socket was quite full of old dielectric grease which I cleaned some out but could it be that or a wiring issue?

Any ideas why this could be?

Brakes depressed no running lights

Running lights on no brakes (right is brighter as if brakes are depressed)

Running lights on with brakes depressed (left becomes same brightness as right)

Sounds like a socket or wiring problem.

First thing to do is get it working correctly with normal light bulbs.

Now, it seems there is a wiring problem in addition.

Because LEDs draw so little current, some problems such as crosstalk which sometimes have no affect on normal light bulbs, will show up with LEDs.

Use a low cost analogue meter to check every wire.

Make sure the grounds are solid and the power wires are putting out full batt voltage.
