‘89 RS steering column wiring question 🚗 💨

Hello, I’m building a HooptieX rally race car and need to install a DIY push-button start. I can’t find solid info on the wiring. I know the purple wire is the ignition… because it’s a Chevy. Can anyone help me figure out the rest? Thanks!

You are not looking at the Ignition-Switch Connectors.
Please refer to the Thread in the Hyper-Link below:

Thanks for the link, but I’m confused. These are the wires coming out of the steering column. I want to bypass these altogether?

The First Post shows what the Ignition-Switch Connectors look like.
You will see a Linkage-Rod going down the Steering-Column to operate it (from the Lock Cylinder).

The Last Post shows Hyper-Links to Schematics for what you need.

The Connectors in your Images are for the Multi-Function Switch of the Steering-Column.

Nothing to do with the Ignition-Switch.
Switch Connections shown below:

I’m not seeing the blue connector at all. No red wire coming in. Puzzling!

I have no idea what is "required" for your race rules. But wanted to let you know, you can install push button start switch without disturbing any of the dash wires. However it does require the key to be inserted and turned on before push button will work....

Use a 60 amp SPST relay under the hood. Run larger wire from the positive distribution block beside battery to relay. Another larger wire from relay to starter - replaces the purple wire at starter solenoid. Terminate that purple wire safely so that it never finds a ground by accident. Any smaller size wire from relay to ground. And last any smaller size wire from relay to your interior push button switch. Then just wire the other side push button switch to a "hot-in-run" (several in fuse box that take standard spade connector).

Wiring for the relay - terminal 85 to ground, terminal 86 to the push button switch, terminal 30 good gauge wire to positive distribution block, and terminal 87 good gauge wire to starter solenoid replacing the purple wire.

So - when you turn on key, you get positive going to push button switch. Then you push the button, and that positive runs under hood to relay terminal 86 and activates the coil in the relay (coil already grounded on 85). The coil in the relay takes the positive from the battery on terminal 30 (distribution block) and sends it directly to the starter solenoid on terminal 87.

You need to terminate the left over purple wire safely because it will still have positive on it from the key when you turn the key to start (which you will many times out of habit). Done. No need to mess with existing dash wiring, and starter wiring (purple wire) remains in tact (safely terminated and tucked away).
