Odometer Mileage Reset

Prior to purchasing my car in December, the previous owner installed a replacement Instrument Cluster because a couple of gauges had failed.

Unfortunately, he did not reset, or didnt know how to reset the Odometer to the correct mileage, so it reads 24, 387 miles higher than actual. I know this as the change was noted in the service records. Since the car is old, no "legal" entity cares, but I do.

I took the old unit apart, but it appears from my "look see" and YT videos that the only way to release the digits and reset the numbers would be to buy the kit and remove and replace the "troublesome" little gear.

Is that correct, or is there another way? The gear is fine right now.

TIA.

You have no choice but to lift the shaft to get the gears to separate so the number barrels can be rotated freely.
