1989 Firebird 2.8L V6 VATS Question
Hi there,
I have an Issue with a 1989 Firebird SX I recently purchased. My neighbor inherited this car from the second owner who had it since 1991. She was a school teacher and drove the car sparingly, then the car developed a issue with the VATS system and it never got resolved, so the car sat for the last 20 years inside her garage. When she passed my neighbor inherited the car, but was unable to get the car running. The car did have an issue with the fuel tank and fuel pump both of which were replaced. I also called the dealer and was able to get the VATS key resistance (7) and had a key with a chip cut for it, but that didn't solve the issue. I have read this forums tech on the VATS system and know it inside out. My question is I have bypassed the started relay and the car turns over and will start if you manually spray a little gas in it. I bought a VATS bypass module on eBay, but noticed that the V6 does not have the dark blue wire or the circuit 229 for the injector and looking at the ECM pinout it only shows an ignition (pink/black) wire from the VATS module to the ECM. I was just wondering if the VATS on the V6 only controls the ignition or if there is another port that deals with enabling the injectors???
Your help is much appreciated, I'm dying to get this car running.
PS; back in the day I also owned an white 83 Trans Am with T-Tops and a crossfire V8 - so this car has a lot of sentimental value
Thanks for your help Glen

schematic doesn’t seem right, if your having a vats issue and I assume it’s the 302 ecm
serv number you can use a 86-88 prom with no vats

Re: 1989 Firebird 2.8L V6 VATS Question
Hi,
Yes it is the 302 ECM. Your diagram is correct, and it only shows a pink/black wire from the the Vats to the ignition pin on the ECM. The V8's have two wires from the VATS to the ECM one of which is the dark blue wire connecting to pin 229. Just wondering if something else could be wrong with the injectors and that maybe it's not VATS related? My next option is getting a Eprom with the VATS eliminated if I can't solve the problem. But my question was does the V6 have the injectors enabled through VATS or is it just the ignition????
Thanks Glen

Re: 1989 Firebird 2.8L V6 VATS Question
Vats does cut injector pulse if it’s consistent pull the prom
to see if it will run in lhm. If it does get previous tune.

Did you actually verify that the injectors are not being pulsed? Hook up a 12 volt LED on one and look for the flashing.
