Wire harness issues

I just purchased an 87 GTA flame red, I haven’t owned a gta in many years and have been dying to get my hands on one again! Long story short to that it seems like all the connectors on my harness that goes to the relays and what not are either cracking or the wires are pulling out. Any suggestions on the best way to fix this? There also many issues with the plastic casing around the wires being very brittle.
thanks everybody!

Re: Wire harness issues

I think what you're describing is insulation shrink back? In your situation it's probably due to many years of heat cycles and high underhood temps. Yeah, it's a serious problem because if adjacent wires short then you could get a fire.

If there is enough extra length of wire, you could possibly cut back the wires and crimp new terminals on the ends. The remaining wire that's been inside the plastic looms might still be okay because it's had better heat protection inside the loom all these years. If all the wire is toast then you might have to lay new runs of wire or find a harness in better condition.

Welcome to TGO,
You could go the route of splicing in new connectors as well and it wouldn't hurt to get some new relays as well
